NDIS Transport Assistance in Bayswater and Melbourne's East

Getting to the doctor, your job, a class or catching up with friends shouldn’t depend on whether someone in your family is free to drive you. Our NDIS transport assistance helps you get where you need to go, with a support worker who can travel with you and support you once you arrive.

We’re based in Bayswater and provide travel support and disability transport services to participants across

What is NDIS transport assistance?

NDIS transport assistance is support to help you travel to appointments, work, study and community activities when your disability makes it hard to use public transport on your own. Depending on your plan, it can include a support worker driving you or travelling with you, transport funding you use to pay for taxis or rideshares, and training to help you travel more independently. What you can use depends on how transport is funded in your plan.

How we can help you get around

Our assistance with travel can include:

Transport to appointments — medical, allied health and other appointments, with support while you’re there if you need it.

Travel to work, study or volunteering — getting there on time and settling in.

Community activities — social outings, sport, classes and events.

Shopping and errands — trips to the shops, bank or post office.

Moving around safely — help getting in and out of bed, transfers, and using mobility equipment you already have.

Travel training — learning to plan trips, use a myki card and catch buses or trains on your own.

Support on public transport — a support worker travelling with you until you feel confident.

How the NDIS can help with transport

The NDIS funds transport in a few different ways, which is why it can be confusing. Here’s a simple overview.

Type What it is Example Where the funding usually comes from
Participant transport funding Money in your plan to pay for your own travel, like taxis or rideshares, when you can't use public transport A taxi to work three days a week Core supports – Transport, often paid as a regular payment
Activity-based transport A support worker drives you to or from an activity they're supporting you with Your support worker drives you to a swimming class and supports you there The budget for the support, often Core – Social, Economic and Community Participation, charged per km plus time
Provider travel The cost of your support worker travelling to meet you Your worker drives from their last visit to your home The budget for the support being delivered, within NDIS time limits
Travel training Learning to travel independently Practising the bus route to TAFE until you can do it alone Capacity Building supports
Multi-Purpose Taxi Program (Victorian Government) A state subsidy of 50% off taxi and rideshare fares, up to a cap per trip, for eligible Victorians Using your MPTP card for a trip to the shops Victorian Government, separate from the NDIS

Transport costs, including per-kilometre charges, are agreed in your service agreement before support starts, so there are no surprises.

Travel training: building confidence to travel independently

For many people, being able to get around independently opens up work, study and friendships. Travel training breaks a trip into manageable steps, from planning the route and topping up your myki to knowing what to do if a train is cancelled. We practise with you until you’re confident, then gradually step back. Read more about our life skills development support.

Who may benefit from transport assistance

Transport assistance may suit you if you:

  • can’t use public transport on your own because of your disability
  • need support during the journey or at the place you’re going
  • rely on family members for lifts and want more independence
  • have regular appointments, work or study you need to get to
  • want to learn to travel on your own

Is transport covered by your NDIS plan?

The NDIS may fund transport when you can’t use public transport without substantial difficulty because of your disability. Participant transport funding is often paid as a regular amount at one of several levels, depending on your work, study and community activities. Activity-based transport and provider travel are usually charged to the budget for the support you’re receiving. Every plan is different, so check your plan or talk to your plan manager, support coordinator or our team.

If you live in Victoria, you may also be eligible for the Multi-Purpose Taxi Program, which subsidises taxi and rideshare fares.

Frequently asked questions

Does the NDIS pay for transport?

The NDIS may fund transport if your disability means you can’t use public transport without substantial difficulty. It can be funded as transport money in your plan, as activity-based transport with a support worker, or as travel training.

What is activity-based transport?

Activity-based transport is when your support worker drives you to or from an activity they’re supporting you with. The vehicle costs are usually charged per kilometre to the same budget as the support.

Can a support worker drive me to appointments?

Yes, if it’s agreed with your provider and included in your service agreement. How it’s charged depends on whether the worker is also supporting you at the appointment.

How much NDIS transport funding will I get?

It depends on your plan. Participant transport funding is set at one of several levels based on your work, study and community activities, and is often paid regularly into your account.

Can I use the Victorian taxi subsidy with my NDIS plan?

The Multi-Purpose Taxi Program is a separate Victorian Government subsidy for eligible people. Many participants use it alongside their NDIS transport funding. Check eligibility with Safe Transport Victoria.

What is travel training?

Travel training teaches you to plan and make trips on your own, such as catching a bus or train. It’s usually funded through Capacity Building supports.
