NDIS Community Participation Support in Bayswater and Melbourne's East

A good week isn’t only about getting things done at home. It’s catching up with friends, going to the footy, trying a class, volunteering, or simply getting out to the shops on your own terms. Our NDIS community participation support helps you take part in the activities that matter to you, with a disability support worker by your side for as much or as little help as you need.

We’re based in Bayswater and support participants across. Whether you’re exploring support for yourself, your child or someone you work with as a support coordinator, we’re happy to talk it through.

What is NDIS community participation?

NDIS community participation is support that helps people with disability take part in social, recreational, educational and community activities, either one-on-one with a support worker or in a group. It’s usually funded through the Core support category Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation. Some plans also include Capacity Building funding to build skills and confidence for social participation over time.

What community participation support can look like

Your support is built around your interests, not a fixed program. It might include:

Social activities — catching up with friends, going to a café, the movies or a local event.

Sport and recreation — joining a gym, swimming, bowling or a local sporting club.

Hobbies and classes — art, music, cooking, gardening or a short course.

Volunteering and work experience — getting involved in community engagement roles that build skills and connections.

Everyday outings — shopping, the library, appointments that are part of your week, or getting to know your local area.

Cultural and faith-based activities — attending community, cultural or religious gatherings that are important to you.

Building confidence in public places — practising things like ordering food, using public transport or meeting new people.

In Melbourne’s east, that could mean a walk in the Dandenong Ranges, a visit to a local library, a weekly sports session or a trip into the city. We’ll plan around where you want to go.

Community access support: one-on-one

Community access support pairs you with a disability support worker who goes with you to the activities you choose. It’s flexible, follows your pace and suits people who want help with something specific, such as joining a new club, or who prefer quieter, individual outings.

NDIS group activities

NDIS group activities bring people with shared interests together, with support workers on hand. Groups can be a relaxed way to meet people, build social participation skills and try something new without going it alone.

One-on-one or group: which suits you?

Most people need everyday personal care. Some health-related tasks need workers with specific training and are delivered as high-intensity support.

Review and adjust

We check in regularly with you, your family or support coordinator, and change things as your interests and goals grow.

Is community participation covered by your NDIS plan?

Community participation is commonly funded under Core supports, in the category Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation. It pays for the support you need to take part, such as a support worker’s time.

Some plans also include Increased Social and Community Participation under Capacity Building. That funding focuses on building your skills and confidence over time, such as social skills coaching or a program designed to help you become more independent.

It’s important to know what’s usually not covered. The cost of the activity itself, such as tickets, memberships, class fees or meals out, is generally a personal expense. Every plan is different, so check your plan, ask your plan manager or support coordinator, or talk to us. You can also read the NDIS explanation of plan budgets.

If you need help getting to and from activities, you might also want to read about our travel and transport assistance.

Support that puts your choices first

You decide where you go, who you go with and how you spend your time. Our role is to make those choices easier, not to direct them. We’ll get to know your interests, routines and any support needs, such as communication preferences, sensory needs or a mealtime plan, so you feel comfortable and safe when you’re out.

We also work with the people around you. Family, carers, support coordinators and therapists can be involved as much as you’d like, and we’ll follow any plans or strategies they’ve put in place.

Who may benefit from community participation support

Frequently asked questions

What does NDIS community participation funding cover?

It generally covers the support you need to take part in community, social and recreational activities, such as a support worker’s time. The activity costs themselves, like tickets or memberships, are usually paid by you.

What's the difference between Core and Capacity Building community participation funding?

Core funding (Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation) pays for support to take part in activities now. Capacity Building funding (Increased Social and Community Participation) helps you build skills and confidence to participate more independently over time.

Does the NDIS pay for the support worker's entry fee?

It depends on the activity and your arrangement with your provider. Ask us before booking so you know what to expect.

Can I choose the activities I do?

Yes. Community participation is built around your interests and goals, so you choose the activities, and we plan the support around them.

Are NDIS group activities cheaper than one-on-one support?

Group activities usually cost your plan less per hour because support is shared between participants. One-on-one support costs more but is fully focused on you.

Can a support worker drive me to activities?

Transport costs are often charged separately, depending on your plan and service agreement. Read more about travel and transport assistance.

Can community participation help me find work or volunteer?

Yes, support can include volunteering and work experience activities that build skills and community engagement. For longer-term employment goals, other NDIS supports may also apply.

Do you offer community participation in Bayswater?

Yes. We’re based at 3/15 Railway Parade, Bayswater, and support participants across. Call 03 9798 8893 to check your suburb.
