What is NDIS personal care?

NDIS personal care is hands-on help with everyday self-care tasks, such as showering, dressing, toileting, grooming and eating, provided by a trained support worker in your home or community. Under the NDIS it usually falls within Assistance with Daily Life in your Core supports budget, often listed as assistance with self-care activities, and providers may also call it assistance with daily personal activities. The aim is to help you stay safe, comfortable and as independent as you’d like to be.

How personal care and NDIS daily living support can help

Every person’s support looks different. Depending on your needs and goals, your personal care assistance might include:

Showering, bathing and hygiene — help in the bathroom, with as much or as little assistance as you want.

Dressing and grooming — choosing clothes, getting dressed, hair care, shaving and skin care.

Toileting and continence support — discreet, respectful help, including with continence aids.

Eating and drinking — help with meals and drinks, following any mealtime plan you have from your health team.

Moving around safely — help getting in and out of bed, transfers, and using mobility equipment you already have.

Morning and evening routines — getting ready for work, study or the day ahead, and winding down at night.

Medication prompts — reminders to take medication as prescribed, within our workers’ scope.

If your needs are more complex, such as help with a PEG feed, catheter care or complex bowel care, this is usually funded and delivered as high-intensity support. You can read more on our High-Intensity Support page.

Personal care or high-intensity support: what's the difference?

Most people need everyday personal care. Some health-related tasks need workers with specific training and are delivered as high-intensity support.

How it works

Have a chat with us

Call 03 9798 8893 or email info@careexpert.com.au. We’ll ask about your routine, your goals and what support you’re currently getting.

We check how your plan is managed

Let us know whether your plan is NDIA-managed, plan-managed or self-managed so we can explain how payments work.

We plan your support together

We’ll agree on the days, times and tasks, plus anything that matters to you, like the order you like things done or preferences about your support worker.

Your support begins

We’ll introduce the disability support worker who’ll be visiting you and set up a service agreement so everything is clear in writing.

We check in and adjust.

Needs change. We’ll review your support with you, your family or your support coordinator and make changes when you need them.

Support that's shaped around you

Personal care is personal. You decide how your support is delivered, and we follow your lead. That might mean keeping the same small team of disability support workers so you’re not explaining yourself to someone new every week. It might mean a worker who speaks your language, or one of a particular gender for personal care.

We also work alongside the people already in your life. Family, carers, support coordinators and health professionals can be involved as much as you’d like. If you have a plan from an occupational therapist or speech pathologist, we’ll follow it.

Who may benefit from this support

Personal care and daily living support may suit you if you:

  • need help with self-care tasks because of a disability
  • want to stay living in your own home, or with family, with the right support
  • have a family member or carer who needs a break from providing personal care
  • are leaving hospital or another setting and need support to settle back in at home
  • want help building a routine that gives you more confidence and independence

Is personal care covered by your NDIS plan?

Personal care is commonly funded through the Assistance with Daily Life category of Core supports, but what you can use depends on your individual plan. If your Core funding is flexible, you can generally use it across Core categories. If supports are stated in your plan, they can only be used as approved.

We can’t promise funding, and the amount of support in your plan is decided by the NDIA. If you’re unsure what your plan covers, check your plan document, ask your support coordinator or plan manager, or talk to us and we’ll help you understand your options. You can also read the NDIS guidance on plan budgets .If you don’t have NDIS funding, ask us about private support arrangements.

Frequently asked questions

What does NDIS personal care include?

NDIS personal care includes help with self-care tasks like showering, dressing, grooming, toileting, eating and moving around safely. The exact support depends on your needs, your goals and what’s funded in your plan.

Is personal care covered by the NDIS?

Personal care is commonly funded under Assistance with Daily Life in your Core supports budget, but it depends on your individual plan. Check your plan or ask your support coordinator or plan manager if you’re unsure.

How many hours of personal care will the NDIS fund?

There’s no set number of hours. The NDIA decides funding based on your disability-related needs, informal supports and goals, so the amount differs from person to person.

Can I choose my support worker?

You can tell us your preferences, such as gender, language or personality, and we’ll do our best to match you. If a worker isn’t the right fit, let us know and we’ll look at other options.

Do I need to be NDIA-managed, plan-managed or self-managed?

We can support participants whose plans are NDIA-managed, plan-managed or self-managed. Only registered providers can be paid from NDIA-managed funds.

What happens at the first meeting?

We’ll talk with you, and anyone you’d like involved, about your routine, preferences and goals. Together we agree on the support, times and service agreement before anything starts.

Can personal care support help my family carer have a break?

Yes, regular personal care support can reduce the load on family members or informal carers. For longer breaks, you might also look at short-term accommodation and respite.
