NDIS Short-Term Accommodation and Respite in Bayswater and Melbourne's East

Everyone needs a change of scene sometimes. NDIS short-term accommodation gives you time away from your usual routine and the people who support you, and gives your family or carers time to rest and recharge, so your everyday arrangements can keep working well for everyone.

At Care Expert Australia, we provide NDIS respite care for participants across, with support shaped around your needs, interests and routines. We’re based in Bayswater.

What is NDIS short-term accommodation?

NDIS short-term accommodation (STA) is funded support and accommodation that gives you time apart from your usual carers, usually for up to 14 days at a time and up to 28 days a year. It can be provided in a respite house, another suitable accommodation setting or your own home. You may also see it called respite or short-term respite. STA is designed to support your usual care arrangements, not to fund holidays.

How NDIS respite care can help

A short stay can be a chance to:

  • give your family or carers a planned break
  • try new activities and meet new people
  • practise everyday skills, like cooking or managing a routine, in a supportive setting
  • experience living away from home before considering a move such as supported independent living
  • keep your support going while a family carer is unwell, travelling or needs time for themselves

What's included during your stay

Depending on your needs and plan, our support during a short-term stay may include:

  • Accommodation setting: confirm whether Care Expert has a respite house, partners with accommodation providers, or provides STA in the participant’s own home
  • support from disability support workers,
  • personal care and help with daily routines
  • support to take part in activities you enjoy
  • following your health, mealtime and behaviour support plans

Under current NDIS rules, some costs aren’t covered by STA funding, such as food, holiday packages and activity tickets. We’ll explain any out-of-pocket costs before you book.

Who may benefit from short-term disability accommodation

Short-term disability accommodation may suit you if:

  • you live with family or carers who provide a lot of your support
  • your carers need a planned break to keep caring sustainably
  • you’d like to build confidence living away from home
  • you want to try a new setting before making a bigger housing decision

Is STA covered by your NDIS plan?

STA NDIS funding is included in Core supports when the NDIA decides it’s reasonable and necessary, based on your support needs and your informal care arrangements. It’s usually funded for up to 28 days a year, in blocks of up to 14 days. Children can access STA only in some situations.

The NDIS changed how STA is priced from 1 July 2026, with separate components for accommodation and support. If you’re not sure what your plan covers, check with your plan manager, support coordinator or our team, or read the NDIS page on short-term accommodation.

Frequently asked questions

How many days of STA does the NDIS fund?

The NDIS usually funds up to 28 days of short-term accommodation a year, used in blocks of up to 14 days at a time. More may be funded in exceptional circumstances.

Is STA the same as short-term respite?

Yes. The NDIA briefly called it Short Term Respite (STR) from October 2025, but the 2026–27 pricing returned to the name Short Term Accommodation (STA). Both describe the same support.

What does NDIS short-term accommodation include?

STA includes accommodation and the support you need during your stay, such as personal care and help with daily activities. Under current rules, food, holiday packages and activity tickets are generally not covered.

Can I use STA for a holiday?

No. STA is for a break from your usual care arrangements, not for holidays, travel packages or crisis accommodation.

Can I have short-term accommodation in my own home?

Yes. Current NDIS guidance allows STA in your own home, as well as in shared or individual accommodation settings, depending on what suits your needs.

Can children use NDIS respite care?

Children under 18 can access STA only in some situations. The NDIS expects usual parenting responsibilities to continue, so talk to your planner or support coordinator about your circumstances.

How far in advance should I book?

Booking early helps, especially for school holidays and long weekends.
