SIL vs SDA: What’s the Difference?

Two different supports, one important distinction: the home and the assistance you receive.
General information · 5 minute read

SIL is about everyday support

Supported Independent Living is assistance or supervision with daily tasks to help a participant live as independently as possible. It is about the support provided, rather than ownership or rental of a home.

SDA is about specialist housing

Specialist Disability Accommodation relates to purpose-designed housing for eligible participants with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs. SDA does not itself include everyday personal support.

They have separate eligibility and costs

A participant may have SIL without SDA. Rent, groceries and utilities are generally separate from daily support funding. The NDIS assesses individual eligibility and funding; neither service is guaranteed.

Explore the arrangement that suits you

Consider your access needs, preferred location, who you want to live with and the support you need. Ask a coordinator or NDIS contact to explain your options before committing to an arrangement.
This guide is general information. NDIS eligibility and funding are determined individually. Check ndis.gov.au for current requirements.
